I don't know ... he was from his time and with advanced knowledge then thrown back into an older time .. also a blue collar guy .. he had the steam plant operation book in his boot/trunk. AOD is my least favourite of the trilogy but I don't think it's that unrealistic if you can pretend that he wouldn't have developed a serious infection in that wound stump (because you never see him wash or treat it in any way other than to tape it up). Shock would have taken over through to massive blood loss .. Ash should have been shivering and pale looking. That's why he's the King  :wink ..
